Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica Main Game Screen

Battlestar Galactica General Information:

When you think of television science fiction what comes to mind? Star Trek, probably, but what else? Maybe Lost or Stargate? An underrated but still very popular gem, which you didn't probably didn't think of (don't lie) is the Battlestar Galactica series. Originally starting in the late 70's and branching out into other media since , it was only a matter of time before somebody came up with pokie machine carrying the name. Don't worry, it wasn't designed by Cylons, so it is quite fair.

The Battlestar Galactica pokie game runs on the Microgaming software system. One of the most popular and prolific creators of online pokies, Microgaming has been in the business for over a decade, and have now taken their experience and applied it to a Battlestar Galactica themed game. This was released in late 2012.

As is standard with games offered by the Microgaming software system, this game is available for play on PC, Mac, mobile and tablet systems, such is the versatility on offer.

Battlestar Galactica Main Game Screen

Battlestar Galactica comes with a total of 243 paylines over 5 reels in a 3×5 layout. As this is a ways-to-win game the player cannot adjust the number of active paylines.

  • The minimum coins bet sits at 1
  • The maximum coins bet sits at 10
  • Minimum coin size sits a 0.01
  • Maximum coins size sits at 0.05
  • The return to player offered by this game sits at around 96.6%, on the higher end of average.

These are accessed by hitting the small options button which can be found towards the lower-left of the main game screen.

  • Game Play Settings

These settings allow the player to select quickspin in both regular play and the freespins bonus game. This speeds up the reels so there is less time wasted waiting around.

  • Graphics Settings

While the graphics in Battlestar Galactica aren't especially impressive, they do rely on a lot of short video animations. Because of this it is only natural that they include various graphics settings, as video can be draining on older or less powerful hardware. The graphics settings in this game are separated into Basic, Standard and Enhanced. While enhanced will obviously look the best basic should work the best on mobile devices, due to their more limited power.

  • Sound Settings

Battlestar Galactica offers four possible sound options. The first of these is these ability to mute all noise generated from the game, which can also be achieved by simply clicking the sound icon at the top right of the main game page. The player can also choose to individually mute game sounds, win sounds, and background sounds.

  • Balance, Bet and Win Values

There are two options here which allow the user to choose between a currency display of either coins or credits.

Clicking on the credits button on the main page also allows the player to quickly switch between coin and credits display.

Clicking on the bet button brings up a display which allows the player to change their coin size and the total amount of coins bet.

The autoplay button allows the user to choose a variety of, you guessed it, autoplay options. The quick ones on offer are a 10, 25, 50 and 100x autospins, with an additional option to keep the game running until the stop button is manually clicked. This also allows the user to click the custom button to set further autospin rules. Here the player can enter their own custom amount of autospins and choose between 2 stop settings, these are once the spins are all complete, or once a certain amount has been won or exceeded.

Battlestar Galactica also comes with two help sections in the form of question-mark and view pays buttons. The view pays buttons gives a detailed listing of individual symbol, bonus values and game rules, while the question-mark offers general information on rules.

Also on offer is a stats button which, when clicked, brings up a display. This is split into 2 sections, spin results and highest wins. Spin results lists spins played, session time and spins per hour. The highest wins section lists the top three wins. Both sections only apply to the current game session.

Players can also click on the win button to bring up a list of the top 5 wins. When these were won, and where, is not listed.

The original Battlestar Galactica begun in 1978 with a television series. The general premise of this series, and all subsequent Battlestar Galactica series, was that in the distant future mankind had conquered the distance between stars and colonised a group of planets. These planets are called the 12 Colonies.

The humans in these colonies have been in constant war with race of robots and cybernetic organisms. These are called the Cylons, and they are total dorks.

After a long and brutal struggle things don't go well for the humans. This is despite their enemies largely looking about as threatening and coordinated as a group of C3PO's. Fleeing from the colonies, fighting off the Cylons all the way, the survivors eventually (spoiler warning) manage to settle on the fabled 13th colony. They call this colony Earth. Turns out it was actually set in the distant past, what a twist!

Other Features and Bonuses

Battlestar Galactica Wild

The wilds symbol in this game comes in the form of the Battlestar Galactica sigil.

At maximum bet the payouts are as follows:

  • 2 give a bonus of 2 credits
  • 3 give a bonus of 20 credits
  • 4 give a bonus of 50 credits
  • 5 give a bonus of 300 credits

These stack on the first reel in normal play and the free spins bonus game. They also substitute for every icon except the scatter symbol.

Battlestar Galactica Scatter

The scatter symbol in Battlestar Galactica come in form of a ship against the background of space.

At maximum bet the payouts are as follows:

  • 3 scatter icons give a bonus of 75 credits
  • 4 scatter icons give a bonus of 150 credits
  • 5 scatter icons give a bonus of 750 credits

Gathering 3,4 or 5 of these on a single spins grants access to the free spins game. These do not have to be on any winning paylines in order to be activated or payout.

BONUS GAMES and features

The free spins game is activated when the player gains 3,4 or 5 scatter symbols during a single spin. When activated this gives the player 15 free spins at a 3x multiplier.

The total amount bet during these free spins is taken from the amount which was bet in the round in which the free spin bonus game was activated. Additional free spins cannot be retriggered from within this game.

The Ion Storm feature can occur randomly on any normal mode spin. When this occurs up to 5 reels turn wild. Free spins cannot be triggered during Ion Storm.

Battlestar Galactica FTL

The Run feature also occurs randomly on any normal spin. When this is activated all wins pay both left to right and right to left. In this feature a new FTL symbol can appear. When this lands on the middle reel any card symbols will transform into other mystery symbols which generate additional wins.

The Fight feature can only occur during the time the Run feature is activated. During this feature random symbols can be turned into wilds at any time. These can split even further to create additional winning combinations. 3 or more scatter symbols in this game will generate 5 free spins.

Finally we have the ranking feature. This is illustrated by a simple line, or experience bar, across the bottom of the page. Simply spinning the reels adds to this bar, with higher ranks unlocking additional video content. This experience bar fills up faster the more is wagered.

How to Play:

For the simplest possible experience the player need only choose their bet and click the spin button. Further customisation of their bet can be accessed by the user clicking on the bet button and changing their coin size and total coins wagered.

For autoplay and more advanced options the play can click on the autoplay button, this allows the player to select 1 of 5 basic autospin options, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x or until manually stopped, or click customise to further change their options.

In the custom screen the player can enter their own amount of spins and set end rules, these rules are either once the spins are complete or once an entered amount of money has been won or exceeded.

Overall Design and Usability:

If you've played anything from Microgaming from the past decade you should at least be a little bit familiar with the layout which is being used in Battlestar Galactica. The general design is based around the modern television series, with most icons and videos being lifted directly. The music and graphics design are pretty decent here, they all fit very well with the theme.

When it comes to usability, Battlestar Galactica is no slouch either. This game comes with all of the options which players have come to expect, and everything works just as it should. I am especially fond of three different graphical options. As someone who likes to game on both desktop and mobile devices this gives me a lot a versatility. Unfortunately the lower graphics settings do cut out some of the video content. This is to be expected, but it does sort of defeat the purpose of the ranking system.

Where to find it:
