Beauty and the Beast Main Game Screen

Beauty and the Beast Basic Information:

There are certain stories that are so popular they are known by an entire culture. Jack and the Beanstalk, The Boy who Cried Wolf and, in this case, Beauty and the Beast. While most people are familiar with either the animated Disney version, or the modern live-action musical version, the story itself has a history as far back as the 1740's. As is common, this popularity was jumped on and used for a pokie theme. Is it any good? Keep reading to find out…

Beauty and the Beast was created by the team at Yggdrasil. These aren't the biggest gambling software team out there, but they aspire to great things. Hence their slogan “We are not the biggest but the best”. Whereas other teams have the edge in sheer volume, Yggdrasil focuses on quality, and this game is a great example of that.

As is standard with online pokies, Yggdrasil runs on flash compatible devices. This means most desktop and laptop computers, as well as many tablets and other mobile devices. Generally speaking; if your device can run HTML 5 and Flash then it should be able to run this pokie.

Explanations of these features can be found below in the other features and bonuses section below.

The original Beauty and the Beast was written by French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and published in 1740. While various versions of this story exist, they all follow a general theme.

The story involves a young, beautiful woman who lives in a mansion with her siblings and widowed father. Here the beauty is treated poorly, and looked down upon by her brothers and sisters. When an accident occurs at sea and costs the family their fortune they are forced to live in a small farmhouse and work to support themselves. Oh, the humanity!

After a rough night the father finds his way into the mansion of the Beast. On his way out he decides to steal a rose for Beauty. The Beast does not care for this. This results in an agreement where the Beast allows the father to take the rose as long as the merchant or one of his daughters return. While the merchant intends to keep this a secret, Beauty manages to work the secret out, and goes to visit the castle.

After being locked in there for a few months, hanging out with the Beast and being waited on by an invisible wait staff, beauty slowly finds herself coming down with Stockholm Syndrome, and falls for the Beast. After being manipulated into leaving by her sisters the Beauty finds herself drawn to her former captor, and returns to comfort the heartbroken beast. Her tears over the Beast transform him into a handsome prince, and then the newly wealthy couple get married and live happily ever after.

Other Features and Bonuses

Beauty and the Beast Wild

The wild symbol in this game comes in the form of a golden framed mirror (is that what it is?), with golden WILD text written in front. This can substitute for any symbol except the free spins symbols.

Beauty and the Beast Free Spins

The free spin symbol in this game comes in the form of a rose which sits upon a golden wreath.

  • 3 of these give 10 free spins
  • 4 of these give 10 free spins and 1,000 coins
  • 5 of these give 10 free spins and 5,000 coins

These can be retriggered from within the free spins game. When this occurs the amount of remaining free spins will be reset to 10 and an extra free spin servant will be gifted.

The Golden bet feature, which is activated by clicking the golden chip button located to the left of the spin button, comes with three possible choices.

The first choice is the Boost option. This costs a total of 5 coins per spin. This is activated when free spins are won, and will activate 2 of the free spins servant features.

Choice number 2 is called Nudge. This costs a total of 15 coins per spin. Nudge activates each round in the base game and increased the amount of free spins wins possible when it is active.

The final choice is called Boost and Nudge. As you might expect, this combines the two previous Golden bets into one. When selected this will cost 30 coins per spin.

The freespins bonus game gives the player 10 spins, during these spins the servants feature is activated. The first servant which is used is selected by the player. The three available servants are as follows:

The Butler: When activated this feature nudges one reel up or down in order to create the highest possible paying combination.

The Chef: When activated this feature synchronises the middle three reels. This means the middle three reels all contain the same symbols.

The Maid: When active the Maid will place 2-4 wild symbols in random positions on the board.

When free-spins are retriggered in this game the player will be given an extra one of these features, and the amount of remaining spins will reset to ten. Once all three of the these servant features have been activated no further free-spins can be activated in that free-spin game.

How to Play:

Simple play in this game require only one choice from the player. Here, the player only needs to choose their coin value and then hit spin.

For more advanced options the player must rely on the autoplay function and options. To start autospins the player need only click on the autoplay button which is located to the right of the spin button. From here the player only needs to select the amount of spins they want from the displayed list and then click spin. Stopping options for these autospins can be set from within the options menu.

Overall Design and Usability:

Yggdrasil are no slouches when it comes to design, and this game is a great example of this. While there are a lot of different variants of Beauty and the Beast to choose from, this pokie seems to take from cartoonish interpretation. While this brings up the thought of the Disney film it is different enough to not generate and potential copyright issues. The general look is that of wealth and luxury. The game theme itself is based around the wealth of the Beast and his castle. From here all the symbols are well designed, though this does not extend to the game-frame, which is largely standard Yggdrasil fare.

When it comes to usability, this is game which obviously places a value on simplicity. All of the buttons here are responsive, as is the game itself. Of all of our time running this game we saw no problems with the game whatsoever. The only real problem here might be the lack of user input when it comes to placing bets, as only one value can be changed.

Where to find it:

Yggdrasil isn't as common as the big boys like Microgaming and NetEnt. This means that it is usually only offered on the largest gambling sites or some of the more targeted smaller ones, if you already have a favourite site then search around, you might find that the game is already on offer.

If it isn't, or if you want a more specific list then you can check out our reviews on some on of the following sites. These all have Beauty and the Beast available:

As is common with Yggdrasil, this is a game which is fantastic in most ways. The design and graphics are great, and the music is very well suited. While this is obviously designed for adults, it is the type of game which would be very appealing to a children who are fans of cartoons. The quality here extends to the bonuses and features, which offer a solid blend of player input and random winnings.

The only real way in which this game might be considered a let down is the fact that there is only really one way to modify the player bet. If you are a player who places a lot of importance to bet customisation then this might not be for you. On the other hand, if you want a new pokie to play, or are a fan of cartoonish and well designed pokies in general then I would absolutely recommend this pokie.
