Big Chef Main Game Screen-min

Big Chef General Information:

There are a lot of themes for pokies which make sense. Movie tie-ins to promote a product – sure, references to mythology – okay, a game based around food – why not? Big Chef aims to bring the excitement of the kitchen to the fun of winning big. An odd combination to say the least, but certainly one which is making a bold move. Is this chef worthy of your time, or is he more deserving of a visit from the health inspector? Read our review to find out…

The Big Chef pokie game runs on the Microgaming software system. One of the most popular and prolific creators of online pokies, Microgaming has been in the business for over a decade. With this pokie they have now taken their experience and applied it to a Big Chef themed game.

Big Chef comes with a total of 30 paylines over 5 reels in a 3×5 layout.

  • The minimum coins bet sits at 1
  • The maximum coins bet sits at 10
  • Minimum coin size sits a 0.01
  • Maximum coins size sits at 0.05
  • The return to player offered by this game sits at around 97%, which is on the higher end of average.

To access the options menu in Big Chef the player needs to click on the small double arrow button to the bottom right of the main game screen. This will bring up a box where the player can click options to enter the options menu. The options menu that will then appear is split into 3 sections. These are as follows:

  • Game Play Settings

This part has two options – quickspin and quickspin in free spins. This enables the quickspin feature in either of these game modes. When toggled this will speed up the spinning of the reels so that there is less time spent waiting for them to come to a rest.

  • Graphics Settings

There are two options within this section – basic and enhanced. While enhanced will make the game look better and improve its effects it will also be a larger draw on resources than the basic setting. Because of this users on older or less powerful devices should probably stick to the basic setting, if the default enhanced gives them any trouble.

  • Sound Settings

This section offers four different toggles. The first of these will simple mute all game sounds. The other three options allow the user to individually mute the sound coming from the game, win sounds and background sounds.

Other Settings

The autoplay button allows the user to choose a variety of autoplay options. The quick ones on offer are 10x , 25x, 50x and 100x autospins. From here the player can also click on the autoplay button to further modify their options. This includes two simple sections:

  • Spin Settings

This section allows the player to manually enter the amount of spins which they wish to complete, or choose from a drop-down list.

  • Stop Settings

These settings set when the autospins will stop. There are three possible options here. First is stop when all spins have been completed. The second is when a win exceeds or equals an entered amount. The final option stops the autospins if one of the base game features is won.

To change the sound the player can click the mute button to the upper right of the main game screen.

Big Chef also comes with a help section in the form of the pays section. This lists all of the available paylines, the symbol payouts and the different bonus structures. To gain access to this the player must click on the pays button the right side of the main game screen.

Also on offer is the question-mark button. This works similar to the view pays button, and will bring up a list of helpful information about the game and its bonus structures when clicked.

There really isn't much to speak of when it comes to the background of this game. It seems to be based in a kitchen, with various workers being represented by various symbols. I'm not really sure if the player is supposed to be the staff or customer, maybe you guys can figure it out.

Other Features and Bonuses

Big Chef Wild

The  wild symbol in this game comes in the form of the Big Chef logo. During the free spins bonus game, after the symbol appears, the wild will rise by one place on each spin. This will continue until is has left the reels completely.  This can substitute for any symbol except the scatter and free spins symbols.

Big Chef Scatter

The scatter symbol in Big Chef comes in the form of a blue menu. When the player gains 3 or more of these on a single spin they are then awarded 10 free spins with a 2x multiplier. This does not need to appear on an active payline in order to generate a win.

  • 2 of these give a bonus of 3 when gathered
  • 3 of these give a bonus of 15 when gathered
  • 4 of these give a bonus of 60 when gathered
  • 5 of these give a bonus of 300 when gathered

Big Chef Free Spin

The free spin symbol in Big Chef comes in the form of a cloche. Gaining a single one of these on reel 5 will give the player a free spin.

BONUS GAMES and features

There are two possible ways to access free spins in Big Chef. The first is by gaining a single free spin symbol on reel 5. This will give the player 5 free spins, with the rising wilds feature. The second way is by gathering three or more scatter symbols on a single spin. This will give the player access to 10 free spins with a 2x multiplier. Additional free spins cannot be retriggered from within this game.

How to Play:

For the simplest possible experience the player need only choose their bet and then click the spin button. To further modify their bet the player needs to click on the bet arrow. This allows the player to modify their coin size and coins bet.

The autoplay function allows the player to select a standard 10x, 25x, 50x or 100x autospin, based on their current bet, or the player can click on the autoplay option in order to further customise their bet. This section includes how many spins are to be completed and 3 separate stopping scenarios.

Overall Design and Usability:

Why is it that cartoon versions of food always look so good? Big Chef is a game which has obviously been designed by some very talent artists. This extends to most facets of the design, from the graphics to the animations. The characters themselves are charmingly designed, whereas the food products were enough to inspire me to take a break to go and get something to eat. The only real let down in design comes about the play-bar which is the standard Microgaming affair just with a simple orange tint.

When it comes to usability we have a game which does very well in a time where options are often stripped away. With the ability to change graphics and individual sounds settings this game aims to out itself as one of the more user friendly games out there. This isn't just limited to options either, as the game itself runs very well, responds quickly and appears to be very reliable. Microgaming put a lot of effort into their quality assurance, and in this game it shows.

Where to find it:

Microgaming is one of the most popular gambling software systems available, and is the main software used by a great many websites. If you already have a favourite gambling website then do a quick search, it might already be on offer. If it is not, or you would prefer a direct link then check out some of  the links below.

A simple theme for simple game. Big Chef has a lot to offer in terms of rewards, though it could do a little bit better when it comes to bonus structure. This is a game which we can absolutely recommend to all players, not just those who are fond of the theme. Big Chef looks great, plays well and is a lot of fun. It is also a game which will make you hungry, so keep that in mind before you jump on in.
