Double Dragons

Double Dragons Main Game Screen

Double Dragons Basic Information:

It is a common misconception that dragons only eat people. While they have been known to chomp down on the occasional fool or particularly tasty looking individual their main diet consists of gold. This also explains why they spend so much time sitting on piles of gold and sleeping. As good as it might feel, the digestive system is not equipped to handle nuggets, crowns and cutlery, so the dragon's likely spend most of their time in a state of malnutrition and metal poisoning. Are these Double Dragons worth fighting, or are you likely to get eaten twice as fast? Read our review to find out…

Double Dragons was created by the team at Yggdrasil. These aren't the biggest gambling software team out there, but they aspire to great things. Hence their slogan “We are not the biggest but the best”. Whereas other teams have the edge in sheer volume, Yggdrasil focuses on quality, and this game aims to be an example of this.

As is standard with online pokies, Yggdrasil runs on flash compatible devices. This means most desktop and laptop computers, as well as many tablets and other mobile devices. Generally speaking; if your device can run HTML 5 and Flash then it should be able to run this pokie.

Dragons have appeared in mythology all throughout human history. From the large and broad beasts of Christianity to the slender flying-snake like dragons of China, the idea has proved popular enough to stand the test of time.

Double Dragons does not appear to be based off of any preexisting dragon property or mythology. Instead they simply appear to be an interpretation of Chinese dragons into a modern pokie game. No muss, no fuss.

Other Features and Bonuses

The first of the feature on offer from this game is the Dropdown Win feature. This feature becomes active each time a winning combination is created. When this is done the winning symbols will vanish from the board. Following this, additional symbols will drop in from the top of the game screen into the empty slots. Further matches will repeat this process until no further wins are possible.

If the Dropdown Win feature is active for 4 consecutive wins the player also gains the use of the Double Dragon feature. With this feature active 2 high-stack wilds will be added the board. These can be between 7 and 28 symbols long.

Double Dragons Wild

The wild symbols in Double Dragons can appear as either blue or red, ice or fire. When these take part in a combination they will trigger a further effect, depending on their type. When the Fire Dragon wild is active it will convert 2-3 additional regular symbols into wilds. If the Ice Dragon wild activates it will multiply the dropdown win by 2x.

Double Dragons Dragon Heads

When these wilds activate they take the form of a dragon head, such as the fire one displayed above. Each time one of these appears they will add one to the counter on the right side of the screen. Fire dragons give red gems, whereas ice dragons give blue. One a total of 9 of these have been gathered the player will gain access to the free spins bonus game.

The free spin bonus game in Double Dragons is activated when the player gains at least 9 coloured gems of either blue or red. Each of these will give out their own special version of the free spins game, Fire Spins or Ice Spins. If both of these are triggered simultaneously the Fire Dragon spins will play out first.

During all free spins mode the player needs only gain 2 consecutive dropdown wins in order to activate the Double Dragons feature.

The difference between the types of spins comes down to the additional wilds which will be placed on the reels. While in the Fire Spins bonus game the player will be given additional Fire wilds. In the Ice Spins bonus game the player will gain access to additional Ice wilds.

How to Play:

Simple play in this game require only one choice from the player. Here, the player only needs to choose their coin value and then hit spin.

For more advanced options the player must rely on the autoplay function and options. To start autospins the player need only click on the autoplay button which is located to the right of the spin button. From here the player only needs to select the amount of spins they want from the displayed list and then click spin. Stopping options for these autospins can be set from within the options menu.

Overall Design and Usability:

When you create a game with dragons as a theme you have two main avenues. You can make a cartoonish design, simply but not especially attractive, or you can make a more involved 3d design. This second method requires a lot more work, otherwise it runs the risk of looking awful. Yggdrasil have, as they tend to do, met this challenge head on. Here their use of high quality graphics and animations help show why they do so well. The look here mostly involves dark colours, with the lighter parts being used for the eyes of the dragons, and the various collectable gems. Great work on this front, not many could have pulled off what Yggdrasil did here.

In terms of usability, this is a game which offers a good deal. Almost everything which the average and advanced users could want is included within this game, and done so in a way which is both simple and effective. This is also a game which showed no reliability issues during our testing process, and was nothing but both fast and responsive. In fact, the only areas which we could take issue with in this pokie is the lack of graphical options. This is an impressive looking game, so it might not play so well on older or less powerful hardware. Because of this it might exclude some of us, which we don't love.

Where to find it:

Yggdrasil isn't as common as the big boys like Microgaming and NetEnt. This means that it is usually only offered on the largest gambling sites or some of the more targeted smaller ones, if you already have a favourite site then search around, you might find that the game is already on offer.

If it isn't, or if you want a more specific list then you can check out our reviews on some on of the following sites. These all have Double Dragons available:

Double Dragons might be initially disappointing to those players who go in expecting a modern retake on the old console games, for everyone else disappointment is not on the cards. Double dragons is a game which looks fantastic, plays well, and has a fun bonus structure. Yggdrasil yet again show us why it is their name is synonymous with quality. All range of players, from newbies to veterans, should be able to find something to love about this pokie.
