Football Gladiators Basic information:
Football and Gladiators. The most popular new sport in the world combined with the most popular old sport of ancient Rome. An odd combination, to say the least, but in this case it works amazingly well. While I initially dismissed the idea of having sportsman so keen to ‘simulate' in a fighting arena, I am now officially sold on the idea. Football Gladiators also comes with official support in the form of real players.
Created by Stakelogic, also known as Novomatic, Football Gladiators was released in May of 2016. The designers and programmers at Stakelogic aim to offer something a little different from the competition, and it shows. To come up with a concept such as this you'd have to be trying to do something new.
As the Stakelogic software system is very versatile it is available on a great many systems which support flash based media. This means most desktop computers, as well as laptops and some tablets and mobile phone devices.
Football Gladiators comes with a total of 25 paylines over 5 reels in a 3×5 layout.
- The minimum coins bet per line sits at 1
- The maximum coins bet per line sits at 4
- Minimum coin value sits a 0.01
- Maximum coins value sits at 0.50
- The return to player offered by this game sits at around 96.1%, at or slightly above average.
The first option which players are given access to is the ability to select between four characters. Each of these represent a famous football player, and have been adapted into the garb of ancient warriors.
In order to access the additional options in Football Gladiators the player must click on the green button with three horizontal lines located in towards the lower left of the game. From here the options are separated into 6 tabs and a close options button. These tabs are as follows.
- Main Settings
The options allow the player to toggle on or off the intro screen and animations. The animations button is especially useful for those running on older or less powerful hardware.
- Spin Settings
This tab comes with three different options. The first is the option to switch fast spin on or off. This is useful in cutting down the time waiting between spins. The second option toggles the ability to spin the reels with the space-bar. The final option allows the player to select an autoplay amount and start their autospins. In the box here players can choose 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 or 100 spins.
- Sound settings
These options allow the player to switch off all game sounds or just background sounds.
This one isn't so much an options screen as it as an information screen. This page lists, bonuses, paylines and symbol payouts.
- Game Rules
Another informational page which lists, as you might expect, the game rules.
- Bank Settings
While playing for real money this page brings the player to the cashier. Here they can add in more money or withdraw their winnings. In fun mode, which is the no money mode, this serves no purpose.
Other Helpful Additions
The main game page for Football Gladiators comes with some more useful features which should not be overlooked.
First we have the ability to click on the coins text on the lower bar which reads coins. Clicking this changes the currency display between coins and Euros.
Clicking on the green button with 25 written on it will link the player directly to the paylines section of the options page.
By clicking on the up arrow which is located next to the total bet box the player can customise both their coin value and the amount of coins which they want to bet per line.
The green play button with a circular arrow surrounding it start autoplay. This is a faster method than going through the options menu. This is automatically set to 100 autospins.
The max bet button automatically sets all betting options to their highest. This means the greatest risk, but also offers the highest rewards on a win.
Finally we have the green spin button on the furthest right section of the bar. This will simply spin once with the entered settings.
Football, or soccer as it less commonly known, is the world's most popular sport. It probably doesn't need much of an introduction then, does it? Maybe you're just not into sports, so I'll lay it out for you. The game is played between 2 teams of 11 players. The goal of 10 players of this team is to get the ball into the rectangular goal at the other teams end of the rectangular field, and stop the other players from doing the same, using only their feet. The remaining one player, the goalkeeper. must stick near their own goal and is allowed the use of their hands.
The earliest mention of a football like game is found, as many things are, in ancient China.
The game persisted in many forms over thousands of years before the current game began its formation sometime around the mid to late 1800's. Since then the game has taken the entire world, being the most popular sport in both Europe and the South America's, and being the most popular sport in the world, overall.
Gladiator combat, on the other hand, isn't quite so popular these days. Originating sometime around the 3rd Century B.C, these game really took off between the 1st century B.C and the second century A.D.
In these game the fighters, the gladiators, would face each-other and animals in violent combat. This would commonly result in severe injuries or death. On the upside, if you can call it that, the best gladiators were often celebrated as heroes. In other words these were the celebrity football players of their day, only with less faking injuries and more murder.
Why combine the two? Well, despite what you might think of comparing warriors to sportsmen, there can be no doubting the fantastic and amazing skill which the best players bring to the game. These are some of the most highly trained and dedicated people in sports. In this way it might be fair to compare the two groups.
Other Features and Bonuses
The wild symbol in this game comes in the form of a symbol of an computer generated Robin Van Persie.
- 3 of these give a bonus of 50
- 4 give a bonus of 250
- 5 give a bonus of 1000
These can substitute for any icon except the bonus symbol.
The bonus symbol in Football Gladiators come in the form of a coliseum type arena. When 2 or more of these appear on the reels the player can select on of them to randomly start one of the two bonus games. These are the chariot race bonus or the battle bonus.
- Chariot Race Bonus Game
In this game the footballers race against the dreaded dark knight. This is performed on a variety of different racecourses. These are separated into easy, medium or large tracks. The small track gives the lowest amount of free spins but the highest multiplier. The large track gives the highest free spin amount but has the lowest multiplier and the medium track, as you might guess, lies somewhere in the middle.
If your racer begins in the lead then the player will receive their full bonus multiplier amount. If they start behind then that bonus is forfeited. In the case that the race is eventually won the the player's bet on the round which activated the bonus game will be multiplier by 10, if they lose it is multiplied by 2.
- Battle Bonus Game
In this game the footballers and the player are pit against one of four beasts of the coliseum. Here the player gets to select one of these four beasts to fight. Each of these has a different difficultly levels and payouts.
In this fight the footballers each get a chance to attack. Here the player selects between four different attacks. Low attacks are the most likely to succeed but have the lowest payout. High attacks have the highest payouts but are the least likely to connect. Middle attacks fall somewhere in the middle.
In lower difficulty versions of this game only 2 successful hits are needed for a multiplier, whereas the most difficult battles require 4 successful hits to qualify for a multiplier.
How to Play:
When the player first enters the game they are given the selection of four characters. These are Andrea Pirlo, Robin Van Persie, Rio Ferdinand and Toni Kroos. These only change some graphics, so just choose your favourite. After this the player needs to click on the up arrow in the total bet box. From here they need only select their coin value and coins bet per line. Once these are selected they need only hit the spin button to the far right of the bar. Maximum betting amount can also be selected by simply clicking on the Max Bet button.
To start autospins the player can click on the green button the left of max bet. This will keep the reels spinning. Autospins can also be selected by going into the spin settings tab of the options screen. In this area the player can choose between 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 or 100 autospins. Autospins can be stopped at any time by clicking the orange stop button.
Overall Design and Usability:
This is a simple pokie game that still manages to be quite impressive. The four different characters and different bonus games really show a level of attention that many pokies ignore. This is aided by the 3d models and limited animations on display. The players are all close to their actual likenesses and their animation is reminiscent of actual football celebrations. Great work all around on the design front.
In terms of usability Football Gladiators does fall a bit behind when compared to some of the more modern offerings by NetEnt and Microgaming, though not by much. Not being able to enter your own custom spin amount or ending options is a bit of a letdown, as are the limited graphics options. While this game isn't especially demanding it is a lot of fun, so those on older systems might feel left out. On the other hand the rules and bonus explanations are a lot easier to follow than most of those on offer by Microgaming and NetEnt. Solid, if not amazing.
Where to find it:
Stakelogic is one of the smaller software systems. Smaller in that it cannot compare to the overwhelming popularity of Microgaming and NetEnt. If you already have a favourite gambling site then take a check it might already be on offer.
If it is not on offer, or if you want a more specific list then you can check out our reviews on some of the following sites, these all have Football Gladiators available:
Still working on this list
A simple game that looks great and runs fairly well. The combination of what should be an absurd combination works surprisingly well, which is no easy feat. While some of the options are a bit lacking the information pages are above what most larger software systems offer. Despite the shortcomings I feel this is a game which punches, or kicks, above its weight. If you like football, gladiators, or football gladiators then check it out. It's also worth a look if you want to try something new, it's a very nice effort.
