Is this pokie any good, or is just another Gothic horror tale? Keep reading to find out!

The Gothic pokie game runs on the Microgaming software system. One of the most popular and prolific creators of online pokies, Microgaming has been in the business for over a decade, and have now taken their experience and applied it to a Gothic themed game.

As is standard with games offered by the Microgaming software system, this game is available for play on PC, Mac, mobile and tablet systems, such is the versatility on offer.

Gothic Main Game Screen

Gothic comes with a total of 15 paylines over 5 reels in a 3×5 layout. The player cannot modify which paylines are active in this game.

  • The minimum coins bet sits at 1
  • The maximum coins bet sits at 10
  • Minimum coin size sits a 0.01
  • Maximum coins size sits at 1
  • The return to player offered by this game sits at around 95.5%, which is around average.

The options in this game are accessed by clicking on the small options button. This is located on the golden bar which runs across the bottom of the screen. Options here are split into three different sections. These are as follows:

  • Game Play Settings

The only option listed under this heading is quickspin. When selected this option enables the quickspin feature. This speeds up the spinning of the reels, meaning less time wasted waiting for them to come to rest once put in motion.

  • Sound Options

There are four possible options here to choose from. The first is the ability to mute all game sounds. This can also be achieved by clicking the mute button on the top-right side of the main game page. Other options here allow the player to individual mute game sounds, win sounds and background sounds.

  • Display Options

The first option here is High Quality Effects toggle. When this is enabled the game will look its best, but might not run well on older or less powerful hardware. It is important to note that if your device struggles to run this game then this should be turned off. If the game crashes, which it is more likely to do on a device which is pushed to its limit, the player forfeits their winnings, so best to be safe.

The other option in this section is the ability to choose between displaying currency in either coin or credit format.

Other Settings

Also on offer from Gothic is a stats button, located on the golden bar on the bottom of the game. When clicked this brings up some basic information and highest win details from the current game session. This does not persist between sessions.

In order to access additional useful options the player must activate the expert mode. This is done by clicking the expert button on the golden bar on the bottom of the screen. This gives the player access to the autoplay function.

The autoplay button allows the user to choose a variety of, you guessed it, autoplay options. The quick ones on offer are 5x and 10x autospins. If those aren't to your liking you can click on the autoplay button to set the options yourself. This includes how many spins you wish to play and two possible stop settings. The first of these stops the spinning when all of the entered spins have completed, the second stops if the amount of money won meets or exceeds an entered amount.

Gothic also comes with a help section in the form of the view pays section. This lists all of the available paylines, the symbol payouts and the different bonus structures. To gain access to this the player must click on the three horizontal lines to the left of the page and then click on the view pays button.

The term Goth refers to people who came from East Germany around the 3rd century. The term Gothic, however, refers not to them but to a style of art which was popularised in the 12th century AD. This style became popular in literature, art and architecture, and has been a mainstay ever since.

This game seems to have taken inspiration largely from the architecture side of things, with the mansion taking the most obvious influence. From here the characters symbols of the man, raven and the woman all seem to be heavily based off characters from the art of the time.

Other Features and Bonuses

Gothic Wild Symbol

The wilds symbol in this game comes in the form of a crystal ball with the word wild written across the face.

This can substitute for any icon except the scatter symbol.

Gothic Scatter Symbol

The scatter symbol in Gothic come in form of what appears to be a golden amulet.

These act as multipliers, with the more symbols gained on a single spin increasing the multiplier. These values are as follows:

  • 3 of these when gathered give a bonus of 50
  • 4 of these when gathered give a bonus of 250
  • 5 of these when gathered give a bonus of 1250

These do not have to be on any winning paylines in order to be activated or payout. Gaining 3 or more of these on a single spin activates the Gem Pick feature.

BONUS GAMES and features

The Gem Pick feature is activated when the player gains a total of three or more scatter icons in one spin.

In this game a total of 15 gems will appear. The player then selects these gems to win prizes. This game is over when the player gets a gem which says collect. All gems up until this point will be added to the collection.

How to Play:

For the simplest possible experience the player need only choose their bet and click the spin button. To further modify their bet the player needs to enter the setting screen. From here they can individually change both their selected coin size and the amount of coins wagered per line.

For autoplay and more advanced options the play can click on the autoplay button, from the expert version of the game, this allows the player to select 1 of 5 basic autospin options, 10x, 25x, 50x or 100x.

Overall Design and Usability:

In terms of design this one of the better looking games out there. Despite being a little bit older and being of slightly lower resolution than many modern pokies, all of the graphics in this game work together to help the game come off as Gothic. Games which use themes are the standard, but few manage to do as well as Gothic. From the symbols to the reds and blacks of the main game screen, this game is one of the nicest.

When it comes to usability, this game is no slouch either. Fast and responsive, and with a great selection of useful options this game includes some of the best option systems that Microgaming has to offer. During our time testing and reviewing this game we also had no problems at all when it comes to reliability.

Where to find it:

Microgaming is one of the most popular gambling software systems available, and is the main software used by a great many websites. If you already have a favourite gambling website then do a quick search, it might already be on offer. If it is not, or you would prefer a direct link then check out some of  the links below.

One of my favourites in terms of looks, but unfortunately this is a game that suffers from a lack of variety when it comes to gameplay. With no free spins and only one major bonus feature to speak of, this is a game which seems to be more form than function. That said, if you are the type of person who only wants a simple but great looking pokie then this might be a perfect fit for you. Otherwise, you might be better off looking for one of Microgaming's more involving creations.
