Great Griffin

Great Griffin Main Game Screen

Great Griffin General Information:

Alliteration not withstanding, the title of this game sounds more like an expression from a surprised dwarf than anything else. Despite sounding like the worlds most tame swear, the game itself is a classic if slightly ageing pokie with a great emphasis on colour and theme. Is it worth your attention, or should it be relegated to forgotten history? Keep reading to find out!

The Great Griffin pokie game runs on the Microgaming software system. One of the most popular and prolific creators of online pokies, Microgaming has been in the business for over a decade, and have now taken their experience and applied it to a Great Griffin themed game. This game was released on the 8th of February, 2012.

As is standard with games offered by the Microgaming software system, this game is available for play on PC, Mac, mobile and tablet systems, such is the versatility on offer.

Great Griffin Main Game Screen

Great Griffin comes with a total of 50 paylines over 5 reels in a 4×5 layout. Paylines can be selected in this pokie. This game offers the ability to activate as many of the paylines as they want, a rare and great addition.

  • The minimum coins bet sits at 1
  • The maximum coins bet sits at 10
  • Minimum coin size sits a 0.01
  • Maximum coins size sits at 0.10
  • The return to player offered by this game sits at around 96.8%, on the higher end of average.

These are accessed by hitting the small options button located on the golden bar on the bottom of the screen. From here the player is given a menu with 3 different sections. These sections are as follows:

Game Play Settings

The only option listed in this section is Quickspin. When active this setting speeds up the spinning of the reels, so less time is spent waiting for them to come to a rest.

Sound Settings

Great Griffin offers four possible sound options. The first of these is these ability to mute all noise generated from the game, which can also be achieved by simply clicking the sound icon at the top right of the main game page. The player can also choose to individually mute game sounds, win sounds, and background sounds.

Balance, Bet and Win Values

In this section the player can choose to display their currency as either Coins or Credits.

Clicking on the credits button on the main page also allows the player to quickly switch between coin and credits display. Alternatively the player can choose to display currency in both coins and credits.

For further options the player can click on the expert button which is located on the golden bar on the bottom of the screen. This allows easier modification of the lines and coins bet, and also gives access to the autoplay function.

The autoplay button allows the user to choose a variety of, you guessed it, autoplay options. The quick ones on offer are a 5x and 10x autospins. This also allows the user to click the custom button to set further autospin rules. Here the player can enter their own custom amount of autospins and choose between 2 stop settings, these are once the spins are all complete, or once a certain amount has been won or exceeded.

Great Griffin also comes with two help sections in the form of question-mark and pays buttons. The  pays buttons gives a detailed listing of individual symbol, bonus values and game rules, while the question-mark offers general information on rules.

Also on offer is a stats button which, when clicked, brings up a display. This is split into 2 sections, spin results and highest wins. Spin results lists spins played, session time and spins per hour. The highest wins section lists the top three wins. Both sections only apply to the current game session.

The creature on which this game is based, the eponymous griffin, is a popular legendary creature from Greek mythology. With the body and tail of lion and wings and head of an eagle, this is creature which combines two of the most powerful animals of the land and sky into one.

These creatures are well known for their eagerness to guard over treasure and other valuables, fighting would be thieves.

The earliest representations of this animal come from somewhere around 3000 BC in ancient Iranian and Egyptian art, but most of our knowledge of their history and design comes from the recordings left by the Greeks. This is why it is largely considered a Greek creation.

Other Features and Bonuses

Great Griffin Wild Symbol

The wilds symbol in this game comes in the form of a griffin head.

  • 2 of these give a bonus of 8
  • 3 of these give a bonus of 50
  • 4 of these give a bonus of 250
  • 5 of these give a bonus of 5000

This can substitute for any icon except the scatter symbols.

Great Griffin Free Spins

The first scatter symbol in Great Griffin come in form of the Great Griffin logo.

These do not need to appear on an active payline in order to qualify as a win.

Gathering 3 of these on a single spins grants access to the free spins game.

Great Griffin Lady Scatter

The second of the scatter symbols in this game comes in the form of a head-shot of a cloaked woman. These can appear on reel 2,3 and 4 only. Gaining three or more of these on a single spin gives access to the Pick Me Bonus.

This game also comes with the popular gamble feature. The player gains access to this feature after any win (unless the win exceed the unlisted gamble activation limit), though they can decline to play. This feature allows the player to choose between a 1/2 chance of double or nothing, or a 1/4 chance of quadruple or nothing. This can be done over as many times as the player wants, until the undefined gamble limit is reached.

The free spins game is activated when the player gains 3 Great Griffin scatter symbols during a single spin. When activated this gives the player 10 free spins. Here the player is able to choose between the red, blue or green versions of the free spins games. The differences between these are as follows:

In this version the player is given 15 free spins with a 3x multiplier.

In this version the player is given 10 free spins with a 5x multiplier.

In this version the player gains access to 5 free spins with a 10x multiplier.

If three or more of the pick me scatter symbols are collected in a single spin then the player enters the pick me bonus game. This changes these scatter symbols into pick me symbols. These are clicked by the player, revealing bonus cash, cash plus a Pick Again symbol, or a random bonus amount plus a Win All symbol. The win all symbol gives the total of all of the hidden amounts.

The total amount bet during these free spins is taken from the amount which was bet in the round in which the free spin bonus game was activated. Additional free spins can be retriggered from within this game.

How to Play:

For the simplest possible experience the player need only choose their coin size, coins bet and active paylines, and then click the spin button. Further customisation can be achieved by clicking on the expert button which is located on the right of the golden bar which runs across the bottom of the screen. This is also how the autoplay feature is accessed.

For autoplay and more advanced options the play can click on the autoplay button, this allows the player to select 1 of 2 basic autospin options 5x or 10x stopped. The player can also click on the autoplay button to further customise their options.

In the custom screen the player can enter their own amount of spins and set end rules, these rules are either once the spins are complete or once an entered amount of money has been won or exceeded.

Overall Design and Usability:

By looking at this game it is immediately obvious that this is not a new creation. While the graphics are all well designed and perfectly fit together in the greater theme, they are of slightly lower resolution than what you would expect today. Despite this problem I would still list this as one of the better looking pokie games available. Few games care much about their theme as this one, and fewer still have as much colour as Great Griffin. Not only are the symbols well designed, but the buttons themselves are customised to this game, which is something which is oddly rare among pokies.

When it comes to usability this is a game that sits slightly above the rest. Great Griffin offers a lot of ways to modify your bet, with the payline selection being something which is missing from a lot of modern games. While there are no options for graphics, which is usually quite important, the age of this game means that it should run well even on less powerful machines anyway. Otherwise this game also performs well, responds quickly, and is very reliable.

Where to find it:

Microgaming is one of the most popular gambling software systems available, and is the main software used by a great many websites. If you already have a favourite gambling website then do a quick search, it might already be on offer. If it is not, or you would prefer a direct link then check out some of  the links below.

A little dated looking, but in a way which is more endearing than it is annoying. This is one of those older games which manages to stay relevant because of the colourful theme and great bonus structure. You don't have to be a fan of ancient Greece or mythological creatures to enjoy this game, if you want something new to try out then I can very much recommend giving it a go. One of my personal favourites, and one that might become one of yours too.
