Hey, you try work that in organically into the intro of a pokie. This game was released with heavy inspiration from the Green Lantern film, in an obvious attempt to cash in on its popularity. Unfortunately for them the film did quite poorly, so it likely wouldn't have brought them exactly what they wanted. Still, it's only fair to judge the game on its own merits. Is this a game which surpasses the legacy of its creation, or is this more of a case of minimum effort? Keep reading our review to find out…

Background:

Green Lantern is a superhero property by DC, the people behind Batman and Superman.

These stories tend to follow the intergalactic peace-keeping force known as the Green Lanterns. These soldiers are selected by a group of immortals known the Guardians, who reside on the planet Oa. These rings are given out to many races all over the universe in an attempt to create a varied and inclusive Green Lantern Corps.

The power of the Green Lantern comes from their rings, which themselves draw power from Oa. These rings tie into the willpower of the Green Lanterns, and allow the Lanterns to create temporary constructs of objects. The strength of these constructs are also dependent on the willpower of the creating Lantern, with greater willpower making fro stronger constructs.

The Lanterns are a powerful force in the DC multiverse, often standing against various would-be galactic tyrants and destructive forces. Perhaps their greatest foe are the other Lanterns, who draw power from other colours which are powered by different emotions. The Yellow Lanterns, for example, are powered by fear, whereas the Red Lanterns are powered by rage.

Other Features and Bonuses

Green Lantern comes with a Collapsing Feature. This feature removes winning combinations from the reels, with additional symbols falling in from above to fill their empty spaces. When these new symbols create matches then the process will continue until no further matches remain.

Green Lantern Power Bar

The above Collapsing Feature also works together with the Green Lantern Power Bar. This is more of a meter which builds up, rather than a protein heavy treat for the weary ranger corps. With this feature every collapse added 1 block to the power bar. 4 or more consecutive collapses randomly trigger 1 of three missions. The greater the amount of consecutive collapses the more that will be added to the power bar. This power will then dictate the charge which players will bring into the randomly won bonus mission. See the bonus games section below for more details.

Green Lantern Wild

The wild in Green Lantern comes in the form of a Green Lantern ring. This can appear on reels 2,3 and 4 only and can substitute for all other symbols.

Green Lantern Stacking Wild

The stacking wild in this game comes in the form of a Yellow Lantern ring. This appears instead of wild symbols in the Fear Fight missions. It can only appear on reels 2,3,4 and 5. These symbols will stack during the entire mission.

Bonus Games

There are a total of three possible games here, each of which is triggered via the Collapsing Feature and Power Bar Feature.

In the Fear Fight bonus game all symbols from the previous round explode, except for the stacking wild symbol. These stacking wild symbols will remain at the lowest possible spot on the reels for the duration of the mission. This mission has unlimited rounds and will continue until the stacking wilds limit is reached. This limit is dictated by how much charge the player brings into the game, via the following rules:

  • 1- level Charge has a stacking wild limit of 5
  • 2- level Charge has a stacking wild limit of 6
  • 3- level Charge has a stacking wild limit of 8

In the Training Center mission the player is given a total of 10 free spins. The higher the charge when entering this game the more wilds will be added to the reels.

The Secret Sector mission has 10 free spins with a dynamic win multiplier. At the beginning of each mission the player is given a random multiplier. With each consecutive collapse in this game this multiplier increases by the step multiplier. Both of these are determined by the charge which the play had when entering the game.

  • 1- level Charge gives an initial multiplier of 2 and a step multiplier of +1
  • 2- level Charge gives an initial multiplier of 2 and a step multiplier of +2
  • 3 level Charge gives an initial multiplier of 3 and a step multiplier of +2

Any no-win combinations in this game resets the multiplier to its initial level.

How to Play:

Basic play for Green Lantern is as simple as a player selecting a betting amount and clicking spin.

Clicking the autoplay button allows the player to go through a selection of different amounts of autospins.

Overall Design and Usability:

When it comes to design this is a game which has obviously been heavily influenced by the film. A large portion of the graphics here, as well as the animations, are directly lifted from the movie, including Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern. This means a lot of greens for the layout, and a background of space and stars. Your appreciation of this look will likely depend on your appreciation for the film, but we can't exactly fault it for being accurate to its poorly received inspiration.

In terms of usability we did have an initial issue with a loading screen sticking around, but that eventually seems to have fixed itself. The rest of the game runs well, and appears fully reliable. We had no other issues during our testing procedure, though we could have used some more graphical options for players on older or less powerful hardware. Overall a strong effort.

Rating:

A game which I went into expecting to be as bad as the film. As it happens, this pokie is one of the rare cases where the spin-off is better than the original. Green Lantern isn't just a good film tie-in pokie, it is a good pokie full-stop. A colourful look which will be very appealing to some, combined with a really great multi-bonus system makes a game with more effort put into it than the entirety of the effort put in by the film's writing staff. If you like the film, colourful pokies, or fun bonus structures then check this one out, it's better than you think.
