Hot as Hades

Hot as Hades Main Game Screen

Hot as Hades General Information:

Hot as Hades, ever heard that expression? Basically it's just an older version of hot as hell. Problem is that Hades is quite different from the judeo-christian version of hell, and it's not generally regarded as super hot. But enough splitting hairs, and let's get down to it.

The Hot as Hades pokie was designed by the very talented artists and programmers over at Microgaming. One of the most popular and prolific creators of online pokies, Microgaming has been in the business for over a decade, and have now taken their experience and applied it to a pokie based around Hades, and the denizens found within. This was released in July of 2015.

As is standard with games offered by the Microgaming software system, this game is available for play on PC, Mac, mobile and tablet systems, such is the versatility on offer.

  • Sound Settings

Hot as Hades offers four possible sound options. The first of these is these ability to mute all noise generated from the game, which can also be achieved by simply clicking the sound icon at the top right of the main game page. The player can also choose to individually mute game sounds, win sounds, and background sounds.

Both sections only apply to the current game session.

Players can also click on the win button to bring up a list of the top 5 wins and recent wins.

The namesake of this game, Hades, comes from ancient Greek mythology. In this mythology Hades had a job as the god of the underworld. He obtained this position by getting together with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon and killing their parents. After finishing the deed Zeus was given the sky, Poseidon the sea and Hades the underworld. Poor guy really ended up getting the short end of the stick.

Together with his three-headed guard dog Cerberus, Hades kept a close watch over his domain.

Despite being effectively quite close to what we in the modern west would refer to as a devil, Hades was apparently a pretty decent guy, at least as far as Greek gods go.

As for Hot as Hades, that seems to be a combination of Hades with the Abrahamic views of hell. Or perhaps the creators over at Microgaming thought Hades an especially handsome god, we may never know.

The scatter symbol in Hot as Hades come in form of a shining skull helm under purple SCATTER text.

At maximum bet the payouts are as follows:

  • 3 scatter icons give a bonus of 500 credits

  • 5 scatter icons give a bonus of 25,000 credits

Gathering 3,4 or 5 of these on a single spins grants access to the Quest for the Crystal Helm bonus game. These do not have to be on any winning paylines in order to be activated or payout.

The Quest for the Crystal Helm bonus game will start when a player gains 3 or more scatter symbols in a single spin. The aim of this game is reclaim the crystal helm which is apparently being guarded by the god's siblings. This is separated into 5 levels.

In this game the player chooses from 5 objects. Each one of these, when selected, will reveal either a random bonus amount, a win all symbol or a block symbol. Getting the random bonus simply adds that money to your pool and brings you to the next level. The win all symbol nets the player all possible cash from the round and brings the player to the next level. The block symbol ends the game. Each different level has a different amount of symbols.

  • Level-1 has four random amounts and one win all.
  • Level-2 has three random amounts, one win all and one block symbols.
  • Level-3 has two random amounts, one win all and two block symbols.
  • Level-4 has the same as level 3.
  • Level-5 has four random amounts and one win all symbol.

On level 5 the player can also choose to discard. When this is selected the player is able to discard their first choice and make a second, this can only be done once. If the second choice gets the win all symbol the discarded amount will not be added, though all others will be.

Free Spins Game

The Free spins bonus game is called Super Mode. This can occur randomly after any spin has been completed. During this bonus game the player is awarded three spins and three wild symbols will be randomly added to the wheels and held there until the bonus game is over. Only one of these wild symbols can be used in payouts for each spin. Additional free spins cannot be reactivated from within this game, and the Quest for the Crystal Helm bonus game can also not be activated during this game.

How to Play:

For the simplest possible experience the player need only choose their bet and click the spin button. Further customisation of their bet can be accessed by the user clicking on the bet button and changing their coin size and total coins wagered.

For autoplay and more advanced options the play can click on the autoplay button, this allows the player to select 1 of 5 basic autospin options, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x or until manually stopped, or click customise to further change their options.

In the custom screen the player can enter their own amount of spins and set end rules, these rules are either once the spins are complete or once an entered amount of money has been won or exceeded.

Overall Design and Usability:

The theme for Hot as Hades, as inaccurate as it may be, works very well for a pokie. Part of this is down the quality of the cartoonish graphics and animations, which are all very well done. The included character symbols, while also odd and inaccurate, still manage to be great reinterpretations, and all hold together well into a cohesive theme.

When it comes to usability; if you've played a recent game from Microgaming you should know what to expect. Everything runs well, for the most part, though there is one odd exclusion. The Quest for the Crystal Helm bonus game does not load with the initial game loading period, and instead only loads once a player reaches the necessary starting requirements. This means loading times in the middle of a game which should have already been loaded. What is even worse is that this didn't even load for me at all in come attempts, getting permanently stuck on this new loading screen.

Where to find it:

Microgaming is one of the most popular gambling software systems available, and is the main software used by a great many websites. If you already have a favourite gambling website then do a quick search, it might already be on offer. If it is not, or you would prefer a direct link then check out some of  the links below.

This is a tricky game to rate, as I really do love the theme. In terms of straight graphics the game is great, as are the bonus games. The real problem is the bonus game loading which can occur in the middle of a game. This straight up crashed for me in 2 out of 5 attempts, while this might not be typical it does raise concerns over design, and is not something which I can simply gloss over.
