Jack Hammer Main Game Screen

Jack Hammer Basic Information:

The use of animated or cartoon themes is not a new idea when it comes to online pokies. This is largely because of the versatility which this affords, and the freedom of design. Most of these work just fine, but every now and then you'll come across one which raises the bar and, in the process, makes many of the other look poor by comparison. Is Jack Hammer one such game, or have I been trying to trick you? Keep reading to find out…

This game operates under the use of the NetEnt gambling software system. The talented programmers and designers from NetEnt are well known for going the extra mile in their creations, and Jack Hammer is no exception. This game was released in late July of 2011.

The NetEnt system is compatible with a great many devices which are capable of running Flash. This means most PCs, Apple computers and tablets, along with a variety of other mobile devices. Check if your device supports flash, if it does you should be able to run games from NetEnt.

Jack Hammer Main Game Screen

Jack Hammer comes with a total of 25 paylines over 5 reels in a 3×5 layout.

  • The minimum coins bet sits at 25
  • The maximum coins bet sits at 250
  • Minimum coin size sits a 0.01
  • Maximum coins size sits at 0.10
  • The return to player offered by this game sits at around 97%, at or slightly higher than average.

By clicking on the spanner icon towards the lower left of the game screen the player can access the options menu. This is only a small menu consisting of a total of two options. These are listed below.

Game Settings
  • Quickspin

Enabling this option speeds up the spinning of the reels. This means that these is less time spent waiting around between the time you click spin and when the reels come to rest, speeding up the entire experience.

  • Spacebar to spin

This option lets the player start the spinning of the reels with a simple press of the spacebar, in addition to the regular methods.

Additional options can be accessed by clicking on the autoplay button. The basic options here allow the play to select from 10, 25, 50 ,75, 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 autospins.

The player can also click on the advanced settings button to further customise when their autoplay will end. There are five different stopping scenarios to choose from here:

  • On any win
  • If Free Spins are won
  • When a single win exceeds an entered amount
  • If cash increases by an entered amount
  • If cash decreases by an entered amount

Other Helpful Additions

Jack Hammer also comes with question-mark and i help icons. Both of these detail much the same thing, basic game and winning information, but the i button does this within the game and the question-mark opens a secondary text page. The page accessed by the i button also lists all payout information, paylines and bonus info.

Jack Hammer has no basis in a preexisting property, instead it is more based on the influence of others. The main source here seems to be those of early detective comics, with the look and feel being very reminiscent of Dick Tracy.

The main character of this pokie, the eponymous Jack Hammer, appears as a hard-boiled detective or private investigator out to stop the Mad Doctor. There are two ways you can tell this doctor is mad – the first is the fact that he is called the Mad Doctor, the second is that in his image he is wearing a suit with a skull and crossbones emblem, cackling maniacally while holding a beaker of orange science juice. Terrifying indeed.

Some of our readers might be a little bit young to fully appreciate this basis for a pokie, but those who do will not be disappointed.

Other Features and Bonuses

Jack Hammer Wild

The wild symbol in Jack Hammer comes in the form of white wild text in front of a comic book type explosion. This can substitute for any symbol except the free spins symbol.

Jack Hammer Free Spin

The free spin symbol in Jack Hammer comes in the form of a bomb which has apparently tipped over onto its side. Gaining five or more of these on a single spins is required to access the free spin bonus game.

  • 5 of these give 10 free spins when gathered
  • 6 of these give 15 free spins when gathered
  • 7 of these give 20 free spins when gathered
  • 8 of these give 25 free spins when gathered
  • 9-15 of these give 30 free spins when gathered

Jack Hammer Sticky Win

The sticky win feature in this game is accessed on a winning bet line of when three or more free spin symbols are gained on a single spin. When this occurs the reels with winning symbols are held and the other reels re-spin for a chance of bigger wins. These reels will keep spinning provided there are new wins. When no new wins are generated and sticky win ends then all active wins are payed out to the player.

 Bonus Games

The free spins bonus game in Jack Hammer is gained when the player gathers 5 or more of the free spins symbols in one spin. Wins which are gained within this game are tripled. The amount wagered in these are then three times the amount which was wagered in the round in which the free spins were won.

How to Play:

Basic play for Jack Hammer is as simple as a player selecting a coin value and level and clicking spin. Alternatively the player can maximise their possible bet by simply clicking on the Max Bet button to the right of the spin icon.

Clicking the autoplay button allows the player to go through a selection of different amounts of autospins. From here the user can also click on the advanced settings button in order to manually select different stopping scenarios. These include on any win, when free spins are won, if a single win exceeds an entered amount, or if cash increased or decreases by an entered amount.

Overall Design and Usability:

The design of this game is one of my absolute favourite, though it does suffer a bit from its age. Let's start with the bad – the standard NetEnt gamble bar down the bottom of the page. While this is good in that it enables players of NetEnt games to instantly figure out how the game works, it is a a bit of a let down when it comes to maintaining a theme. The good – almost everything else about the basic design. The graphics in this game are not only fantastically designed and well suited – they have another advantage from their inspiration. Simply put – these graphics are comic in design, and when the reels come to a rest it makes the game screen appear as a comic strip. Granted, the strip won't make sense, but the fit for the design in this is one of the best I have ever seen.

When it comes to usability, this another area where the game shows its age. While the basic play-bar and betting options are in place, the game's more advanced options are missing. This means no graphical settings, for one, or more advanced control or auto settings. While this isn't a deal breaker, and is fairly expected given the age of the game, I can't help but feel that a couple of changes here could really bring the game up to the modern standard.

Where to find it:

NetEnt games stand with Microgaming as some of the most popular available. If you already have a favourite gambling website then check out if they offer NetEnt games, if they do then you might be able to find Jack Hammer there. If it is not available, or if you want a more direct list then check out the links below.

If you are the type of player who likes a great theme, or who has an appreciation of older comics, then I can absolutely recommend checking this one out. While the looks are fantastic, the bonus structure in this game is a little lacking, as are the available options. If those aren't a problem to you then jump into Jack Hammer. Otherwise you might be a bit better off looking for a more involved creation.
