Jurassic Park Basic information:

Originally written by Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park has ballooned into an enormous franchise covering all types of media. Apart from the films, with which most are familiar, this includes video-games, board games and, now, even a video slot game. This is convenient, as T-Rex's would probably have a lot of problems pulling the arm of a traditional slot machine.

Created by the talented folks responsible for the Microgaming gaming software, one of the most popular and powerful gambling software systems ever developed, Jurassic Park is a pokie game released at the beginning of August of 2014. This was the year before the release of the film Jurassic World, which aimed to bring the series back into the spotlight after a 14 year break. While this was obviously released because of the hype surrounding the new film, this game is based off the first and second films in the series.

As is standard with games offered by the Microgaming software system, this game is available for play on PC, Mac, mobile and tablet systems, such is the versatility on offer.

Background:

The first entry into the Jurassic Park franchise came in 1990 with the release of the book Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. This book, similar to the film, followed Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler as they visit the attraction Jurassic Park. This park brought dinosaurs back to life by taking their DNA which was captured inside various animals captured in amber. This is despite the fact that DNA degrades after a few thousand years, and not many millions. This is science fiction, however, so let's embrace it.

On taking their tour of the island where Jurassic Park is contained things start to go awry. This is because of a corrupt employee who steals information and covers his tracks by messing up the park's security systems. The rest of the story details Alan and Ellie and their adventures to escape the island and avoid being eaten by the various inhabitants. The dinosaurs, not the park staff.

Among what made this, and the following films, so popular was the use of fantastic special effects which really brought out the imposing nature of the dinosaurs. The most notable of these were the tyrannosaurs-rex and the velociraptor. In fact most of the famous dinosaurs from these films came from the late cretaceous period, not the Jurassic, but I guess the name Cretaceous Park wasn't as catchy.

The subsequent films had a similar focus. Dinosaurs brought back to life, things go badly, people get eaten. The most recent film in the series, Jurassic World was incredibly popular, so at least two more sequels are planned.

Overall Design and Usability:

Jurassic Park is similar to many of the offerings by Microgaming, so if you've played a lot of their games you'll know what you're in for, The general design is simple to understand, well labelled, and fast to navigate. The theme works well and has been obvious attention. From the icons themselves to the included video clips, bonus games and animated backgrounds, this is a game which cares about its namesake.

When it comes to usability, Jurassic Park is no slouch either. The game runs well on most systems, which is aided by the graphical options. Player will be able to enjoy this on old and new computers just as easily. The only real problem with this game for the reviewer was the question-mark button on the main game page not linking to anything. This can be a major pain for those wishing to know more about the game that is not listed in the view pays section.
