Subtopia Main Game Screen

Subtopia Basic Information:

Under the sea, where there will be no accusations, just friendly crustaceans. The last great frontier we have on earth, with large portions of this land still remaining uninvestigated. Subtopia aims to bring this underwater wonderland to the world of pokies. Does it succeed, or is this game more likely to give you a case of the bends? Keep reading to find out…

This game operates under the use of the NetEnt gambling software system. The talented programmers and designers from NetEnt are well known for going the extra mile in their creations, and Subtopia is no exception. This game was released on the 21st of February, 2012.

The NetEnt system is compatible with a great many devices which are capable of running Flash. This means most PCs, Apple computers and tablets, along with a variety of other mobile devices. Check if your device supports flash, if it does you should be able to run games from NetEnt.

Subtopia Main Game Screen

Subtopia comes with a total of 20 paylines over 5 reels in a 3×5 layout.

  • The minimum coins bet sits at 20
  • The maximum coins bet sits at 200
  • Minimum coin size sits a 0.01
  • Maximum coins size sits at 0.50
  • The return to player offered by this game is 96.1%, which is around average.

By clicking on the spanner icon towards the lower left of the game screen the player can access the options menu. This brings up a menu with 4 different sections. These are as follows:

 Game Settings
  • Quickspin

Enabling this option speeds up the spinning of the reels. This means that these is less time spent waiting around between the time you click spin and when the reels come to rest, speeding up the entire experience.

  • Intro Screen

This option disables the intro screen from appearing the next time the player starts the game.

  • Ambience sound

This option toggles the background noises from the game. While these are rather atmospheric they might be annoying for some players.

  • Sound effects

This option simply toggles off all sound effects when selected.

Graphics Quality
  • High, Medium and Low

The different graphics settings here serve an important purpose. The higher these are set the better the game will look, but the more demanding it will be on older or less powerful devices. Because of this players should probably set the game to medium or low when experiencing performance problems on their chosen devices.

.Keyboard shortcuts
  • Spacebar to spin

This option lets the player start the spinning of the reels with a simple press of the spacebar, in addition to the regular methods.

Additional options can be accessed by clicking on the autoplay button. The basic options here allow the play to select from 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 autospins.

The player can also click on the advanced settings button to further customise when their autoplay will end. There are four different stopping scenarios to choose from here:

  • On any win
  • When a single win exceeds an entered amount
  • If cash increases by an entered amount
  • If cash decreases by an entered amount

Other Helpful Additions

Subtopia also comes with question-mark and paytable help icons. Both of these detail much the same thing, basic game and winning information, but the paytable button does this within the game and the question-mark opens a secondary text page. The page accessed by the paytable button also lists all payout information, paylines and bonus info.

The game can also be muted by simply toggling the sound button located on the lower left of the game main screen.

Unlike so many themes which are adopted into pokies these days, Subtopia appears to have no direct media inspiration. Instead, this underwater adventure brings together various components of sub-nautical science and mythology into one cohesive game. The game itself includes obvious inspiration from the myth of Atlantis, as well as the type of diving which was common in the early 1900s.

Other Features and Bonuses

Subtopia features a random multiplier in the main game. This feature randomly increases wins between 2x-5x.

Subtopia Wild

The wild in Subtopia comes in the form of a golden statue with some sort of portal inside its mouth. This can substitute for all symbols except the free spins and multiplier meter symbols.

Subtopia Scatter

The scatter in Subtopia comes in the form of a rather uncertain compass set in bronze and blue. Gaining three or more of these in a single spin activated the free spins bonus game. They do not have to appear on active payline in order to generate a payout. These symbols also generate multipliers via the following quantities:

  • 2 symbols give a 2x multiplier when gained in a single spin
  • 3 symbols give a 4x multiplier when gained in a single spin
  • 4 symbols give a 25x multiplier when gained in a single spin
  • 5 symbols give a 100x multiplier when gained in a single spin

Bonus Games

The bonus free spins game in Subtopia is won when the player gains three or more scatter symbols in a single spin. While in this game a free spin meter appears at random. This can increase wins from 2x-6x.

How to Play:

Basic play for Subtopia is as simple as a player selecting a coin value and level and clicking spin. Alternatively the player can maximise their possible bet by simply clicking on the Max Bet button to the right of the spin icon.

Clicking the autoplay button allows the player to go through a selection of different amounts of autospins. From here the user can also click on the advanced settings button in order to manually select different stopping scenarios. These include on any win, when free spins are won, if a single win exceeds an entered amount, or if cash increased or decreases by an entered amount.

Overall Design and Usability:

Subtopia has a theme that you can do a lot with, which is exactly what NetEnt have done. Combining the background of the clear blue ocean with stylistic character and symbol works really well here, and does a lot to sell you on the theme. This quality, unfortunately, only extends to some of the symbols, and none of the character symbols, which feels like a real missed opportunity. Another issue is the play-bar which is set as the default which is commonly used by NetEnt. This really clashes with the rest of the theme, which is unfortunate.

In terms of usability this is a game which performs very well. Subtopia performs extremely well, both in terms of how the game responds and with its reliability. During our testing procedure we found no issues with the way the game works. Complimenting this are the large and clearly marked buttons, which ensure easy play on desktop and mobile devices. We also always appreciate the different graphics options which show up in Subtopia, as being able to turn these down is a massive help to those users on older or less powerful devices.

Where to find it:

NetEnt games stand with Microgaming as some of the most popular available. If you already have a favourite gambling website then check out if they offer NetEnt games, if they do then you might be able to find Subtopia there. If it is not available, or if you want a more direct list then check out the links below.

A game that does well, but which might have benefited from a little extra time in the oven. The pokie itself is fun and attractive, even with its shortcomings. In terms of bonus structure the game accomplishes little more than the expected minimum, which is a little disappointing. That really is the best way to describe this one – disappointing. Subtopia is not a bad pokie, in fact we can happily recommend it to fans of the undersea, or those simply on the lookout for something new, but we feel as if it might have accomplished so much more with its potential.
